CRC Teens in Missionary Service Week 1
1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
I wonder…have we/I forgotten what it means to truly “give thanks in ALL circumstances?” Notice that God is not teaching us to give thanks FOR all things, but rather to give thanks IN all circumstance.
So I pondered if my dinner table prayers of thanksgiving for the food have become mundane and routine instead of from the heart. And when I’m having a bad day, complain and take it out on some unsuspected innocent person like my wife (sorry sweetie). How often have I forgotten to thank my Father for the fact that I’m still breathing, walking and talking?
It was the first full day at T.I.M.S. week at CRC and I spent the day driving to the four different job sites. At first I thought I’d pick and stay with one crew for the whole week. However, that would not give me the chance to get to know all the awesome teens and leaders from the Chambersburg BIC Church and Pleasant View BIC Church.
Throughout the day I continued to make my rounds to the different homes the teams were assigned to, helping out with painting, sawing wood, digging holes, and taking pictures. The heat, humidity, and physical work were easy. But it was the conversations with the residents and my observation of their living conditions that worked on me the hardest.
Leaky roofs, broken windows, holes in the floors, cats, dogs, un-kept lawns, fleas, unidentifiable smells, dirty dishes, stained carpets, torn curtains, clogged gutters, paint chips walls, and loose gates give but a brief description of the first job site I visited. And yet…when I met the owner, despite his living conditions he gave me a firm handshake, a big smile, and a “thank you.”
So..have we forgotten what it means to truly “give thanks in all circumstances?” When it’s hot outside we complain about not having air conditioning, but don’t give thanks for the shade in our backyards or the pool your parents worked hard to buy. We complain about gas prices at the pumps, but forget to thank God for the continued funds to buy the gas needed for our boardwalk and beachside vacations. We cry over spilled milk (literally) on our throw rug, and forget to thank God that we can afford to buy the milk that junior spilled. And we complain about sitting in traffic for an hour on a hot day because of a bad accident, but don’t thank God for keeping us safe and uninvolved in the accident up ahead.
After my first day at T.I.M.S. I was reminded that I have so much to be thankful for, but more importantly I was convicted that it’s time I “give thanks IN all circumstances.” Our joy, prayers, and thankfulness should not fluctuate with our circumstances. God is telling us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to thank Him no matter what circumstance we find ourselves in. That is hard to do, I’m not afraid to admit it, but it’s my quest and prayer to change that mind set (…but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2) How about you?
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” – Colossians 3:23
Working with all of their hearts was exactly what the teens serving at T.I.M.S. did this past week. Each day as I traveled from work site to work site I saw first hand their determination to complete the task given to them. But their determination was not based on “look what we did,” but instead on doing the job from beginning to end in a way that would be pleasing to God.
But their main task was not to rebuild broken steps, repair handicapped ramps, or replace old pipes. No…their main task was to share the gospel with the residents of these homes.
So…each day I would approach two to three unsuspecting teens and challenge them to share their faith. And each evening during our time of worship they told their story. Though they worked hard physically they worked even harder spiritually.
This week at CRC T.I.M.S. Week #1 the real work for the Lord began when the teens shared their faith, relationships were built, and the gospel was planted. Way to go everyone!
By the way…don’t forget your challenge. I look forward to reading your stories.

Brian,
After we left CRC today, we stopped at the BP station in Port Royal to fill up with gas. As I was filling up, a biker dude filling up his motorcycle asked me what CRC on my t-shirt meant. What an opportunity!!!! I was ready for the oppurtunity. I told him what CRC was and what we did all week (working on people’s homes and sharing our faith). He listened very intently and commented that he was impressed that I would take vacation to do something like that. I explained that it was because of our love for Christ and wanting to serve him. I’m so thankful for the opportunity and for being ready to respond today. Thanks for your challenges to the youth and all of us this past week at CRC. God Bless.

Hey Brian,
I called my friend on the phone and told her about the week at CRC and how you dared some of us to share our faith during the week. Then I asked her if her family goes to church and she said sometimes on holidays, but we do believe in God. Then she told me she had to leave. I wasn’t sure if her family really has a relationship with God but thats where I got.
It’s Sunday evening, and I’ve had an atheist friend, lets call him Bob, who God has laid on my heart for quite some time. I prayed so that God would break Bob’s heart. I had consulted a friend, Justin, before I called Bob. Justin said don’t be surprised if Bob hangs up on you. But, I had to stay confident because I have God on my side and I want to be a David. So, I gave Bob a call, and we talked about the vacation he’s going on, he had just arrived in Florida at the time of my call. He asked me how my week was, so I brought up CRC and that I had been on a mission trip for a week, and I told him about God, and asked if he ever considered bringing God into his life. He said he really hadn’t given it a thought, and i had asked him what turned him off about God. (Remember everyone I know, knows this kid as a pure atheist, and he’s proud of it too.) He told me he really just couldn’t see God. I told him the way I see God is through nature, because in Genesis that God created everything, plants, animals, sky, and water. He didn’t say anything, and then said I appreciate you calling me, but I have to go so I can unpack. I let him go, and we both casually said bye. I know I’ve planted a seed, and will keep praying for my atheist friend Bob.
Maddie
Hey Brian,
Me and my friend Mindy ( who was also at CRC this past week ) both had a friend on our mind that we were planning on sharing our faith with. Well, for some reason her cell phone says that shes not accepting calls right now and her home phone is busy because her family has dial up and is always online. So, Mindy, my friend and I are all in marching band together and we have practice on Wednesday. Mindy and I talked and we decided that that would be a good time to talk to her together. I’m very exited to talk to her and pray that God will touch her heart.
Kayla
Your comments are very encouraging to me and exciting. I’ll be praying as you all continue to share your faith with those God has placed in your heart.
Kayla & Molly – I look forward to hearing about Wednesday.
Maddie – Let me know what happens with your friend “Bob”
Hey Brian,
Ever since you told us about the challenge I knew excatly who I wanted to talk to. I kept feeling that I should tell my friend about God so I wanted to call her. As Kayla said we couldn’t get ahold of her so I called Kayla and we decided that we are just going to talk to her at marching band practice on Wednesday. I know that it’s past the challenge but I really feel that I should talk to her. I hope she will see God through Kayla and me and that she will get to know Him also.
Mindy
Mindy – the challenge never ends. Keep sharing your faith. I’d love to hear what happens at band practice this week when you talk with your friend. I am looking forward to taking you and the others from your youth group to the D.C. Dare2Share Conference.
Hello Brian,
As soon as i got home i started talking to some of my friends. My one friend Taylor was going though a rough time with guys, friends, and other stuff. I asked her if she would come to church with me that sunday but she said that he grandfather was taking her boating so maybe she’ll come with me next week. ((I hope so)) Then later that night I talked to one of my friends Zac who I haven’t talked to since school was over! Well it was weird, I’m 100% sure God gave me the opportunity. I asked him if belived in god, and he said no. Then he told me his uncle was a pastor was a preacher and his uncle told him he was going to go to hell, and I said then wouldn’t that want to make you change and he replied no. I asked him “Why” and he said cause. I was like are you afraid you’d lose ur popularity if you’d become a cristian and you’d lose friends. After that he logged off, and I think i really god him thinking. So I’m going to continue praying for them. As for me i’ve been better with my attitude it sometimes gets hard to remeber that we should have the same mercy and forgivness on other just like god had on us. I’m still struggling with my confidence and putting my self down if I make mistakes in life. Thank you foreverything You really opened my eyes and I sat down and read my bible for the 1st time in about 6 months, but this time I really did want to read it instead of someone tell me to read it. By the way this is for everyone Ben Delany came to church on sunday… Thank GOD for the healing he’s still in a little pain but our prayer helped majorly. God Bless and I’ll hopefully see you at Dare2share.
I went home and I got on the computer on msn and I was talking to 3 people that I didnt know that well and I started talking to them and then I asked them if they were a Christian and 2 of them didnt know the lord but one does so I was just talking to them and i really hope they start coming to know the Lord. But I dont know
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
Yesterday (Monday) Maddie and I were waiting for Molly to get done her music lesson and we were in the car listening to you on the radio the whole time. That was so cool! We really enjoyed it!
I had the pleasure of meeting Brian and Kim Ford this summer. Brian was the speaker at 3 different weeks at the Christian Retreat Center. God used Brian in a mighty way to challenge the youth, our counselors, and the full time staff. Brian is not just a speaker but engages himself and interacts with the youth and leaders. We are looking forward to having Brian back again next year, although we told him he has to bring Kim this time!!
